Today I'thou sharing a behemothic set up of costless picture cards for developing vocabulary, promoting critical thinking, and learning alphabet sounds!

Today I'thousand excited to share a project I've spent many hours on…  alphabet motion picture cards.  If you print the whole download, y'all go 192 bright photo cards for all kinds of early learning!

I printed the pages on cardstock, laminated them, and cutting them apart.  At present I have a beautiful ready of cards that will last for years!

x ways to use my alphabet picture cards

1. Talk about the pictures. My Ii was very excited when he saw the cards and wanted to look at the pictures with me.  He sat by the window with a minor stack and named each picture, with my help.  While your child may not want to use them this way, you tin can talk about the pictures equally you lot sit together.

"What's this called?  What can yous do with it?  Is it something you lot would like to eat?  Where would yous find it?"

(Note: These are non designed to exist flash cards.  Please call back that young children have brusque attending spans and may lose involvement after a handful of cards.  No trouble!)

two. Discover the picture.   Put the cards out in a grid and proper name the one you want your child to find.  This is excellent vocabulary building for toddlers and young preschoolers, who may not know as many words as you think they do.

Instance in point: Our Two (soon to be three) is a bright trivial male child, but often mixes up basic vocabulary.  For the longest time whenever a wing came into our firm, he would yell, "A bee! A bee!"  One day he announced confidently, "Flies brand honey!"  ðŸ™‚

3. Sort the pictures .  We started by sorting the pictures into things we can eat and those nosotros can't.  For a sorting do, you lot'll probably desire to get through the cards and select a stack that will work well for the activeness.

Endeavour these sorts for toddlers and preschoolers:

animals / not animals
things we vesture / things nosotros don't wear
things in our house / things outside
food I like / food I don't similar

These are more than challenging and are all-time for older preschoolers and upwards:

living / nonliving
needs / wants

4. Which i doesn't belong?  This will take a little bit of preparation on your part, but it'south worth information technology for a fun activity!  Set upward four cards, and have your kid discover the picture that doesn't belong.

The possibilities are endless!  You lot can make these uncomplicated or challenging.  Here are just a few ideas.  Can your child discover the one that's unlike?

3 foods and 1 animal
three healthy foods and 1 junk food
three real animals and one toy animal
iii vegetables and 1 fruit
3 toys and 1 nutrient
three musical instruments and 1 household object

five. Find the rhyming motion picture.   Ready out a few cards and name a word that rhymes with one of the pictures. Have your kid find its matching rhyme. You lot tin can employ nonsense words too!  Don't be afraid to say, "Can y'all find the word that rhymes with bapple?"

6. Find the moving picture with 1, two, or 3 syllables.   For example, put out the carrot, bat, and ambulance cards.  Tell your child to observe the picture whose proper noun has merely one syllable.  Help him handclapping the words so he can identify "bat" as the correct answer.

7. Sort by offset audio. When yous print the alphabet cards (bachelor as a separate download), you tin utilize them as headers for the columns.   Give your child just two sets of cards, for two different letters. Help him identify the kickoff audio and sort.

viii. Sort by ending sound.

9. Can yous discover the mystery picture? Earlier children are set up to learn to read, they need to be able to hear how sounds come together. Y'all can practise this with these cards.  Put out a set of cards and tell your child, "One of these is the mystery picture!  Hither'due south my inkling.  I want you to point to the answer."

Then say the sounds of a word, pausing in between each sound.  For case: "/a/ /p/ /l/."   Somewhen your child volition exist able to hear how the sounds come up together to make a word, and he'll choose the moving picture of the apple.

x. Which motion-picture show doesn't vest?

This time, instead of focusing on what the pictures mean, focus on the words themselves.  Help your child know what you're looking for.

All of these pictures start with the same letter, except one. Which 1 doesn't vest?
All of these have iii syllables, except one. Which one doesn't belong?
All of these end with the /t/ audio, except one. Which one doesn't belong?

What you lot'll go far the download:

  • viii brilliant photograph cards for each alphabetic character (but but iv for letters q, x, y, and z)
  • For each vowel, y'all'll find 4 pictures for the curt sound and 4 pictures for the long sound.
  • For messages c and k, you'll notice 4 pictures for the hard sound and 4 pictures for the soft sound.

Want to save printer ink?

Impress the smaller prepare.  You'll become just four pictures for each letter, merely you'll still go 8 full pictures for each vowel.  You'll also have 8 total pictures for letters c and g.

How to print

Print the pages front to dorsum, starting on page 2. (Page i is my Terms of Use.)Be sure to set it up to flip on the short side.Practice a practice page first!  The backs of the cards are the names of each picture (see above). If y'all don't want those, but print the even numbered pages.  Be sure to impress on cardstock to make these sturdy!  If you laminate them, they should last for years.

How to store

This may be the coolest part! I designed the cards to fit in 3×5 index card boxes.  Get a long box or two smaller ones to store the entire fix (the smaller set up will store in just one small box).  Be sure to get some A-Z dividers so you can find what y'all need in a bustle.
